Obituary of Jan GELEIN

1943 – Amsterdam, Netherlands 2013 – Calgary, AB Jan Gelein of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the age of 69 years. As a young man in the Netherlands, Jan attended the Hendrik de Keyzer Technical School in Amsterdam. He also served in the Royal Netherlands Army for two years. Jan emigrated in 1967, crossing the Atlantic on the SS Maasdam with his then wife Tina Gelein. After landing in Montreal, they took a train to Calgary where they settled and raised their children. As a contractor, Jan worked in residential construction in Canada, South Korea, Japan, Mongolia and Germany. He had a wide range of interests including politics, cooking international cuisine, charcuterie, fishing, hockey (Montreal Canadiens), photography, music, and tucking into a steak sandwich and a beer. Jan’s biggest passion was travel, having visited numerous countries in Europe, Asia, and South America. Jan is survived by three sons, Marvin Gelein (Heather Joseph), Casper Gelein (Mandy Gelein) and Marcel Gelein (Jennifer Reddy); one daughter Michelle Gelein (Michael Hearn); six grandchildren, Kennedy, Anneke, Milena, Silas, Kees and Marika; as well as by sisters Corrie Wijnberg (Jan), Geert Zantingh (Roel) and Dit Jongkind. He was predeceased by parents Hendrik and Cornelia Gelein; sister Wil Jongkind (Gijsbert); and brother-in-law Jacobus Jongkind. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.) on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
