Obituary of Marion Mayo MURPHY
February 20, 1923 – March 26, 2013
Marion “Mayo” Murphy passed away peacefully on March 26, 2013, at the Rockyview Hospital at the age of 90.
Mayo was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Vince and by her first husband, Freddie Dawson. She is survived by her children, Glyn, Shauna and Tom, grandchildren Chris and Ian, and great grandchildren, Ava, Wesley, Eli,and Emmett.
Mayo was born and raised in Calgary where she attended Central High School, was a member of the Calgary Native Boys Band, and pursued her passion: highland dancing. She married Freddie after high school and they had a son, Glyn. Freddie was killed in action in 1944 after which Mayo worked for her family business, Somerville Monumental.
Shortly after the war ended, she met Vince and they later married, added daughter Shauna to the family and moved to Rochester Minnesota in order for Vince to complete his training in Orthopedic Surgery. The family then moved to Schenectady, N.Y. for Vince to train in pediatric Orthopedics. Upon completing training, the family returned to Calgary where son Tom was born. Mayo turned her attention to raising the children and collecting pets in all shapes and sizes. She also took up skiing, flower arranging, wreath-making, and a short stint in real estate. She loved to travel both with the family and also with friends, enjoying sites and sounds from all over and developing a love of cruise ships. Her final cruise was spent on the Island Hopper in Hawaii with a return to Vancouver via ship with travel partner, Levea Williams.
In 2012 Mayo moved to Bow Crest Care Centre where she met numerous new friends, loved the resident pets, and was cared for in a kind and compassionate way by the wonderful staff. Mayo was a life long animal crusader, having rescued many stray cats and dogs throughout her life and even to the end, she cherished her beloved cat Blossom and dogs Katie and Panda as well as Sylvester, Her pet pal from Bow Crest.
A Celebration of life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial tribute to the Calgary Humane Society.
