Obituary of Sophia Judy HARTLEY
March 18, 1925 – March 6, 2013
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mrs. Sophia J. Hartley of Calgary, AB, after a brief illness at the Foothills Medical Centre on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 in her 88th year.
Sophia was born in Trembowla, Poland and immigrated to Canada in 1938 just prior to the beginning of World War II. She married William H. Hartley on July 30, 1949, after which they lived in various places in Saskatchewan, finally moving to Medicine Hat, AB in 1972. Sophia then retired to Calgary in July 1990, where she continued her great passion of gardening. Our mother, Sophia, was a Catholic all of her life and lived by Mother Teresa’s motto “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” She showed this on a daily basis caring for her children, her pets, and the small plants and animals in her garden.
Sophia is survived by her son, Bill; and her daughter, Judy. Sophia was predeceased by her father John in 1970; her mother, Katherine in 1977; and her husband, William in 1983.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat, AB. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Foothills Medical Centre. Her family would like to thank the Mother Teresa Center in California, the caring staff of Unit 32 and Unit 47 for her excellent care, and most especially Dr. Lyle Galloway who never gave up his attempts to see our mother to a full recovery.
In living memory of Sophie Hartley, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.
