Obituary of Bernadette Janine Marie MCGOWAN

August 20, 1960 – Calgary, Alberta October 15, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Bernadette McGowan (nee Finestone), beloved mother of Kelly Page McGowan, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at the age of 57 years. As a teacher with the CCSB for thirty years, Bernadette touched many lives and was like a second mother to many of her students. Graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Calgary, she soon built a reputable and successful Cosmetology program at Bishop Grandin High School. In 2003 she furthered her education and service to her students by earning a Masters Degree in Education and Counselling. Bernadette was hard-working and had an iron will when it came to accomplishing her goals. Early on, and in connection with her love of music, she achieved the highest level of piano through the Royal Conservatory. After graduating from St. Francis High School she became a journeyman hairstylist, a trade that she took into her teaching career. Aside from her passion for working with students, she loved gardening, quilting and wood turning as ways of providing outlets for her creativity. Bernadette gave many hours of service working at the Mustard Seed and within the Catholic Women’s League. Bernadette leaves behind her loving daughter, Kelly Page McGowan, and was predeceased by her father and mother, Israel and Pat Finestone. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. A visitation will be held prior to Prayers and Tributes at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (835 Northmount Drive N.W.) on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the Church.
