Obituary of Lois Noreen CAMPBELL

April 1919 – April 2012 Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, sister-in-law and friend cast off her earthly bounds Thursday morning, April 19th, in Calgary, days before her 93rd birthday. We grieve but with enormous pride and gratitude for the many gifts she passed on, of grace, wisdom, poise and perseverance. Lois was a doer who both met life’s challenges and created for herself new ones, notably in the realms of life-long personal development, education and public service As an eighteen year-old Regina school teacher, she learned to drive a one-horse open sleigh to her rural one-room school, where she simultaneously taught grades three to nine. In 1945 she married her wartime sweetheart, Duncan Darroch Campbell, and the couple moved to Vancouver where Duncan began his university education and they started a family. Later making Edmonton their permanent home, Duncan launched his academic career at the University of Alberta, and Lois earned her Bachelor of Education degree while bearing three more children and running the family household. In was in the early 1960s that she returned to the working world, first as a lecturer in early childhood education at the university and later serving two elected terms as an Edmonton Public School Board Trustee and two terms as City Alderman. She finished her public service with a lengthy term as a member of the University of Alberta Senate. An accomplished pianist, Lois loved music (especially opera), single malt scotch and her Scottish terriers. She travelled to many faraway places, but always treasured visits to Vancouver Island to be near the ocean and connect and her Bouey kin. While a life well lived may be measured by our contributions and achievements, it is our compassion and humanity which fuel the fondest memories in those we leave behind. Lois shared these in abundance: she was kind, caring, accepting, supportive, a willing helper and dependable advisor, all the while maintaining a strong sense of duty and enormous curiosity in the wonders of the world. Predeceased by her husband Duncan, Lois leaves four children, Heather, David (Irene Velkova), Robert and Neil Campbell, and seven grandchildren, Pia (Ron) Lawrence, Jennifer Christensen, Ailsa and Andrew Campbell, and Thomas, Simon and David Campbell. She also leaves three great grandchildren, Hannah, Noah and Aurelia Lawrence, brothers Howard Bouey and Robert Bouey (Vancouver Island), in-laws Gordon and Sylvia Campbell (Lethbridge), friends Elizabeth Snaddon and Marilyn Wong (Calgary), and a host of loving nephews and nieces near and far. Family members wish to extend their profound gratitude to staff of the Mayfair Care Centre, in Calgary, who cared for Lois during her final three years. The work you do is so very important and utterly necessary. We’ll find perfect peace, where joys never cease Out there beneath the starry sky… We’ll build a sweet little nest, somewhere in the West And let the rest of the world go by
