Obituary of Amelia Irene HAWKER

September 2, 1925 – April 12, 2012 It is with heavy hearts we share the loss of our mother and grandmother Emily Hawker. Mom was raised in Kipling, Saskatchewan and trained to be a nurse in Yorkton. On December 24, 1948, Emily married Ted Hawker at St Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary. Emily devoted her life to her children and her nursing career at the Bethany Care Centre. She was a loving and caring mother who always put others first. Her generosity extended outside of her family, where she made it her goal during retirement to knit a pair of mittens every day for children in need. Mom enjoyed her last few months at Confederation Park Lodge where she developed new friendships and bonds. Emily was predeceased by her husband Ted in 2011 and is survived by her children Carol (Phil) Rix and Ron (Alexandra) Hawker. She is also survived by her grandchildren Amanda Rix, Jacqueline Rix, Charlie Hawker and Amelia Hawker; her two younger sisters Margaret Swan and Grace Kovach; and her brother Joseph Kovach. We are grateful for the care and compassion provided by the health care professionals on Units 32 and 71 at the Foothills Medical Center. At Emily’s request there will be no funeral services. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Salvation Army, 420 – 9 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0R9 Telephone: (403) 410-1111, www.salvationarmy.org.
