December 12, 1929 – February 28, 2012
We are sad to announce Bill Benwood passed away peacefully at the age of 82, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Glenda (Patrick) Denig of Calgary, AB, Janine (Jeff) Thrale of Canmore, AB and Patricia Stauffer of Calgary, AB. And the ‘twinkle’ in his eyes, his granddaughters, Jody, Casey, Sabrena, Krista, Jennifer and extended granddaughters, Dawn (Matt) and Jill (Curtis); and great-grandchildren, Mason & Zara. He also leaves behind his sister Margaret (Werner) Bremness; brother Allan (Emma) Benwood; and sister-in-law Leona Spotowski, all of Edmonton, AB. Bill was predeceased by his parents; his brother Jack Benwood; and most recently his sister, Mary Paul. Bill will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and close friends, especially his best ‘bud’ Ellen Freeman.
He was born in Edson, Alberta where he lived until his family moved to Edmonton, AB in 1943. He then attended NAIT to complete his Plumbing/Gas Fitting apprenticeship. After he moved to Calgary, he went on to pursue his career as a Plumber with the Gov’t of Alberta Public Works where he was employed for thirty-five years. Bill was an avid sports fan. He loved football, baseball, curling, hockey, darts, and of course there was the love/hate relationship he had with golf.
A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to extend a special thank you to friends and family for the time well spent with him in his final days, as well as his Home Care Nurses and all of his nurses, caregivers and doctors at the Santuari Hospice at the Peter Lougheed Health Center.
