Obituary of Leonora Albertha HAYNES

Leonora Haynes of Calgary, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her family on Monday, February 27, 2012 at the age of 103 years. Mum devoted her life to the care and upbringing of her seven children, as well as to being a faithful and loving wife to her husband, before he passed away after fifty one years of marriage. She was a devout Christian and an active member of the Anglican Church for all of her life. Mum provided inspiration to all as she lived her life with a moral and spiritual compass that was straight and true, and an unshakable faith and belief in God as her guide and support throughout her life. Following the death of her husband, mum immigrated to Calgary where she lived with her children until her death. During her time in Canada, (a country she loved very much) she made many new friends all of whom loved and respected her. She also continued her involvement in the Anglican Church group, the Mothers’ Union. One of her most memorable experiences was living in Panama as a young girl with her parents. She frequently referred to that time and would recall for us, the joy of Sunday afternoon walks with her parents to see the ships in the Canal. Another highlight was her gift of singing. She was a well known soprano, who in her youth sang for several choirs. She had a keen and curious mind and enjoyed many vacations, travelling with her daughter Julia to see new places. As recently as the week prior to her death, mum still enjoyed her hobby of solving puzzles, was still an avid reader and maintained an interest in world events. Mum had many fine qualities, especially her love for and devotion to God and her children. Her death will leave a lasting void in the hearts of all her children and fond memories for all whom she met. Leonora is survived by her children, the Rev. Cyril Haynes (Irma), Henderson and Julia of Calgary; Carlisle Haynes and Lucille Nwachuku (Charles) of London, England. Also mourning her loss are her two sisters Mrs. Mary Messiah 98 years old of Barbados, Mrs. Gwendolyn Simpson 89 years old of Boston; seventeen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Leonora was predeceased by her husband Clayton; two sons; Cecil and Carol, two brothers and a sister. Funeral Services will be held at Cathedral Church of the Redeemer (218 – 7th Avenue S.E.) on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow in Barbados.
