Obituary of Carla Jean PENNEY
Carla Jean Penney (nee Johnson) was born on December 10th, 1928 in Taber, AB and passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the age of 83.
Jean was predeceased by her Son Stuart, brothers Elmer, Lloyd, Reed, Paul and Cyril (Evelyn) Johnson and sisters Velda Cappis and Ida Allan as well as her parents Zella and Benjamin Johnson. She will be sadly missed by four sons, Greg, Phillip, Scott and Cameron Penney, daughter Barbara Holberton, one son-in-law and six daughter-in-laws. She is also survived by her five sisters Lola Sharland, Irene Palmer, Sue Bolan (Bill), Meryl Hough (Art), Rissa Ayres and one brother Daryl Johnson (Stella). She was also the lucky grandmother of twelve and great-grandmother of ten. Her ex-husband Bill Penney, sister-in-law Evelyn Smith (Vic), numerous nieces, nephews and extended family will lovingly remember many wonderful experiences and times together.
It seems it was Jean’s calling to be a caregiver, starting as a nurse when she was a young woman. Having six children kept her busy but as they got older she found time to work as a seamstress, teach sewing classes, work at her niece Carlene’s fabric store and do a bit of travelling. In the early 80’s her professional caregiver’s career officially began in Lethbridge at the Green Acres Retirement Lodge as the Head Matron. She thoroughly enjoyed this position and was loved by many for over 15 years. She moved back to Calgary to live with her two sisters Velda and Lola but after Velda’s passing and with Lola moving away she began to care for Alzheimer’s patients in her home. She was also kind enough to care for her ex-husband Bill, until she went into the hospital. Although care-giving took much of her time, Jean was also very creative; she loved to quilt and over the years learned to paint. She had a very strong faith and was a dedicated member of her church.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (Woodbine Chapel 10923 – 24 Street S.W., Calgary) on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Her final resting place will be in Barnwell, AB, the internment date to follow.
