Obituary of Bernhard DYCK
June 29, 1935 – February 12, 2012
Ben passed away on Sunday February 12, 2012, at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, Alberta.
Ben was born June 29, 1935 to Peter and Elizabeth Dyck on the family homestead near Morris, Manitoba. He was the youngest of 7 children.
Ben worked in road construction for many years and owned Dyck Construction Ltd. His company built many of the roads in southern SK, including one that is known to people around Wood Mountain SK as the Sky Road because of it’s height above the trees.
Ben met Vicky in September 1967 and fell immediately in love. They married the same year on December 16, 1967 in Regina, SK. They had 4 children David (Jacinta), Matt (Christina), Brian (Jacqueline), & Dennis and 7 grandchildren Marcus, Michael, Wyatt, Savannah, Olivia, Jordan, and Steven. At one time the family lived in a pink trailer with all pink appliances and with a pink bathtub, that they moved from job site to job site. They eventually settled in Balgonie, SK, and as the children grew, they moved on to White City for 14 years, then semi-retired in Regina, and finally Calgary.
Ben enjoyed his travels to locations like Florida, Hawaii, Japan, Texas, Louisiana, Newfoundland, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Winnipeg. The most frequent trips, however, took the Dyck family to Winnipeg every second winter, loading up the blue station wagon, and heading to Vicky’s sister’s home of Florence and Keith Sprules. Ben loved watching his sons play hockey and travelled many hours and miles to many small towns, and even travelling to Japan for hockey.
Ben’s mischievous smile, wonderful sense of humor and family influenced all who knew him. Ben will be greatly missed.
His parents, his brothers Henry, Peter, Jake and sisters Mary Derksen, Betty Friesen and Susan Thiessen predeceased him.
