Obituary of Deanna Marie MALCOLM
July 5, 1962 – February 11, 2012
Our beloved wife, mother and friend Deanna Malcolm (nee Sutherland) passed away peacefully on February 11, 2012. Deanna completed her journey with ALS in the comfort of her own home surrounded by her loving husband Dan, son Tyler and daughter Megan.
Deanna was born July 5, 1962 to her loving mother Margaret (Peggy) Sutherland (nee Sundlie) and father Jack Sutherland in Nelson, BC. Deanna was a passionate woman who embraced life, work, her friends and family. Deanna’s career as a Registered Nurse began in Prince George, BC when she graduated from the College of New Caledonia and started nursing in the Prince George General Hospital. Deanna and Dan moved to Peace River where she went on to become the Nurse Manager and participated in the Cancer Treatment Chemotherapy Clinic. When Deanna moved to Calgary she worked in The Foothills Hospital Emergency Room and then later at the Tom Baker Cancer Center where she worked in the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic. Her commitment to her nursing profession was reflected in her love for the people in her care. Her dedication to her work was acknowledged by Alberta Health Services when she was the recipient of the Denise Melanson Bursary Award. Her devotion to her studies was reflected in her Bachelor of Nursing with Distinction Degree from the University of Calgary where she received an award honoring her achievements. Deanna was also a dedicated volunteer most recently with the ALS Society and previously as a La Leche League leader and the President of the Peace River Childbirth Society.
Deanna is survived by her loving husband Dan Malcolm, son Tyler and daughter Megan, her father Jack Sutherland, Aunt Jean Okrusko, Uncle Doug (Doris) Sundlie, Aunt Arlene (Harry) Johnson, Uncle George (Pat) Sutherland, Aunt Sister Agnes Sutherland, numerous cousins and family friends; Johanna, Bill, Spencer, Connal and Jade Downing. Her mother Peggy Sutherland and brother Tim Sutherland predeceased her. Special thanks to Holly Gerrish for her friendship, understanding and care during her journey with ALS. Our deepest appreciation to the ALS Society and the ALS Clinic for their support throughout Deanna’s illness; special thanks to Dr. Sayeed, Dr. Murphy and the palliative care team.
