Obituary of William Paddon McKenzie THOMPSON

March 24, 1988 – February 7, 2012 We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of our beloved Paddon on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the tender age of 23. A Queen’s geological engineer and Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School alumnus, Paddon, like his parents, proudly pursued a career in the oil patch. Paddon shared a love of the mountains and the outdoors with his family and friends, enthusiastically embracing backcountry outings, heli-hikes, fishing, canoe trips, as well as sailing adventures. Throughout his life, Paddon travelled the world, from the beaches of Hawaii to the wilds of Africa. He did it all. A recipient of numerous badminton awards including CTV’s prestigious athlete of the week, Paddon was also an avid skier and golfer, humbly driving distances in excess of 300 yards. Paddon twice conquered a cancerous brain tumor with the same determination and courage that guided his life. The many hours spent at the Children’s Hospital created an exceptional and everlasting bond among Paddon, his sisters and his parents. Despite his imposing 6’5″ stature, Paddon was a gentle soul, a gentle man, and a gentleman. He had a passion for art and music that completed him. Paddon (the “Dude”) was a caring listener, a loyal friend, and an unwavering optimist even in the most difficult circumstances. His hearty laugh and trademark grin will forever be remembered by all who knew him. As big as he was, his heart was bigger. Paddon leaves a large footprint. Paddon is survived by his loving parents Joni and John, adoring sisters Allison and Shelby, Grandpa Doug Thompson and Grandma Jean Hughes, aunts and uncles Susan and Richard Oko, Jacqueline Hughes, Virginia and Paul Gladman, Barbara and Michael Mitchell, Susan and Ken Piercy, Rodger and Susan Thompson, Bob and Gretchen Thompson, cousins Robyn and Megan Oko, Claire and Jackson Koke, Jessica Gray and Spencer Warren, John, Cameron and Grace Mitchell, Lauren Piercy and Robin Lindenbach, Jordan, Kyle and Madeleine Thompson and Alexandra and Stephanie Thompson. Paddon is also survived by his devoted dog Duchess. Paddon was predeceased by his grandmother Betty Thompson and his grandfather Bill Hughes. Paddon’s family would like to thank all those who touched his life. A Celebration of Paddon’s life will take place at Christ Church Elbow Park, 3602 8th Street S.W., Calgary on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
