Condolences
Dear Stokes Family,
I am fortunate to have juniored a little for Doug when we were both at FMC. He was a great mentor, kind, and very funny; I always looked forward to going to his office. I am sorry for your loss, which I hope might be tempered in any measure by the knowledge of how many lawyers benefitted from Doug’s example.
Yours truly,
Tom Booth
Dearest Pat,

It was evident to me what a special relationship you had and what a wonderful husband and father he was — a true family man. My heart goes out to you, Charlotte, Anne and Michael at this very difficult time. May you have the strength, peace and courage to face each day during this sad time of mourning. I know your faith will sustain you — I will be praying for you all.

Dear Pat, Mike & family,
We were so saddened to hear of Doug’s passing and our thoughts go out to you all at this difficult time. We have missed our chats at Basketball. The boys lost their Dad this past September so we certainly understand how you must be feeling. Doug was such a kind, gentle soul – such a loss. I, unfortunately, have lost your email but please give me a call (we are still in Aspen) if there is anything we can do to help or if you feel up to a coffee. We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.
Thinking of you,
Suzanne, Matt, Alex & Chris

I just found out about Doug today and am so sad and sorry. I will always remember the year (or so) that I spent with Doug at McLeod Lyle Smith McManus, and how his door was always open to us lowly students. He always had time and was always interested in us. I enjoyed his keen sense of humour and his intuitive sense of what was right. I believe one of your children was born while I was there (1988 to 1989) and he was ever the proud father. He was also very proud of you, Pat, and your accomplishments. For lack of originality we jokingly called him “the Stoker”. He touched my life and made it better, and from reading all of the condolences posted here, it looks like he touched the lives of many many people. He will not be forgotten. Thinking of all of his family and wishing you peace.
Pat,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family at this time. I was deeply saddened to have heard this tragic news.
Len Edwards
To Pat and your family – I was devastated to learn of your loss of Doug. My heart goes out to all of you.
I will always remember Doug as good-hearted and smiling, and (as you aptly described him) as the consummate “lawyer’s lawyer.” It was my privilege to have known Doug and to have practised with him.
Please accept my deepest sympathy.

To Justice Rowbotham and family: Our deepest condolences, and we offer our intercessory prayers for all of you at this most difficult time. Doug was a true gentleman, and was always willing to offer guidance and advice. Doug was also prone to laugh and share his wonderful wit and humor. For that he made difficult matters all the more manageable. He will be missed dearly, but we will be guided by his exemplary example and wise counsel.

Dear Pat,
I had the honor of working with Doug at Rooney Prentice. Always smiling, not a harsh word to say about anyone. Happy times when you and the youngesters would drop by the office. My thoughts are with you and the children. An all round nice guy. Doug will be sorely missed in the Calgary legal community.

Dear Justice Rowbotham and family,
I am deeply sorry to hear about your loss. I articled at Miles Davison LLP but never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Stokes. I did have the pleasure of meeting you when you commenced my entrance to the Alberta Bar. Peace and love to you and your family at this difficult time.
I was very sorry to hear about Doug’s death, and I want to offer you, Patricia, and all your family my heartfelt condolences. I know Doug from my first stay at St. Mary’s Church in Saskatoon, from 1973-75: Doug was a member of our youth group, and a very active member at that. He was certainly a bright young man; but he was even more outstanding simply as a pleasant, companionable young person ready to make his contribution to the group without looking for a lot of fanfare. And, in addition, a young man of genuine faith.
How could you not miss a man like that. God bless all of you in your loss, and be sure that Doug and you are in my prayers.
Fr. Bill
Dear Pat and family:
I was very sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. My deepest condolences to you, Pat, and your family, at this sorrowful time. I fondly remember back to the Fenerty days trading deep (and not so deep) thoughts with Paul G. and Doug, and always having a few laughs. He was a fine lawyer and, truly, one of the good guys. He will be missed.

Dear Pat, Charlotte, Anne and Michael,
Words seem like such a paltry offering, but I wanted to let you know how deeply sorry I am. Like others, my thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
Pat, Charlotte, Anne and Michael,
We are so sad to hear of Doug’s passing. As a first year lawyer at Rooney Prentice I had the distinct pleasure of being mentored by Doug and remember thinking that if everyone in the legal profession was as fun, witty, ethical and smart as he was, I was in big trouble. Doug assured me I would be fine. He was always willing to help me, an excellent lawyer to learn from and loved to stir up trouble in the best way possible. We will really miss him. We are thinking of you all and send our love and condolences.

Pat and Family. Gail and I were saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Doug. He was a very fine man and a true professional. He will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time.
Dear Stokes family,
I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of Doug(ie). Having grown up with Doug during our younger years I always sensed he would become a great lawyer. Mostly because he was the only kid that made us sign a contract to become part of his summer time gang.
Spending many Xmas suppers with him and his family brought great joy to our small family.
Doug continued to stay in contact with my mom (Herta), even after the passing of his mom. The two moms where great friends for many years.
Sorry that we where never able to get together, as Doug and my paths never seemed to cross at the right time to meet up again.
One final thought, as kids, one xmas the family got a card from one relative and in signing off, they forgot to finish off the thought of “saying hell(o)”, Doug thought it was so funny, and we laughed sooo hard about it.
I’m sure he is putting “the Man” to task right now, getting that final contract in order……. Rest in Piece,my friend.
Gary Lanzer
Dear Pat,
I was so sorry to read in the paper that Doug passed away. Although I did not know him very well, I remember him as being a lovely man who always had a smile on his face and would take the time to stop and say hello. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. Betty
Dear Pat & Family,
Please know my prayers are with you and your family. I will remember Doug with great fondness and respect, both from working with him and seeing him socially. He was a man who approached law with a great sense of ethics, much like your father. I, and many others, will grieve with you. All of our hearts go out to you, Charlotte, Anne and Michael.
Bill Quigley
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dearest Family of Doug Stokes,
I join with so many others who knew and loved Doug in offering my deepest sympathy on his passing. Doug was a wonderful mentor and teacher to all of us young associates at Miles Davison LLP. Although I only worked with him for a little over a year and a half, I had heard of him long before I met him as I articled under his student, Todd Lee. Doug proved to be every bit as brilliant, sharp and kind as Todd had described him many times to me before I even met him and I will truly cherish the times that I was able to work with him and learn from him.
May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved him.
Yours truly,
Cecelia Cheung

I am a court reporter and worked with Justice Rowbotham and also with Doug for almost ten years doing hearings. What a joy he was. He shared so often about his children and was so very proud of all of you. He spoke also with such a fondness about his wife.
May the Lord give you peace and great strength to make it through the following very trying days ahead and in the future.

I was fortunate to have Doug as a mentor for many years. He was one of those rare senior lawyers who always had an open door policy. He was an extraordinary lawyer, with a crystal clear sense of ethics. I have often thought that the legal profession would be much better if everyone was able to learn the ropes from people like him. Anyone who knew him also knows that he was one of those rare people who could light up a room with his presence, and who had a very deep love for his family. I am so sorry to hear about his passing.
