Obituary of Beatrice Margaret PIRIE

October 27, 1917 – January 21, 2012 Beatrice Margaret Pirie passed away in Calgary on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the age of 94 years. Pinkie was born in Ottawa, Ontario October 27, 1917. Known as Beatrice to telemarketers and the like; affectionately known as “Pinkie” to her family and friends since 1919. Pinkie was fiercely independent, a capable woman who took care of herself and her mother and her brother for many years. She had polio at an early age and stoically endured two broken elbows and the associated plates and pins that held them together for years. A few hours before her passing she was insisting on a taxi to take her back to her apartment so she could get on with things. She loved her family and shared in her sister Patsy’s family. During WWII the Pirie family home in Ottawa was a boarding house for military officers with her mother and sister as fellow staff members. When her sister married and moved out west to Calgary, Pinkie stayed at home to look after her mother. She worked in Ottawa for the Treasury Board for nearly 40 years then retired to Calgary to be near her sister and family. She was very active with Know Your Neighbor and other organizations. Pinkie is survived by nephew Stephen Wonfor (Wife Lynnie – Daughters Lauren, Zoe and Sophie); nieces P.A. Palmer (husband Tim, daughters Emily and Julia) and Ginnie Godin (husband Jim, daughters Jenny and Johanna and great-nephew James); brother-in-law (as our family tree goes) Herb Wonfor (wife Margaret, children John, Janet, Ruth, Alison and Katherine). She was predeceased by her parents, brother, sister and brother-in-law. Funeral Services will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. By her wishes Pinkie was cremated (with her purse). Thanks to the AHS Home Care team, the staff at unit 73 Rockyview for their kind attention to this wonderful lady. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Calgary Health Trust for Rockyview General Hospital www.calgaryhealthtrust.ca.
