Obituary of Royden WHITNEY
March 9, 1938 – October 21, 2011
Royden peacefully passed away October 21, 2011 at the age of 73, surrounded by the joined hands of his loving family. His battle with Lymphoma at an end.
Royden is survived by his wife, Darlene; son, Douglas of Banff; daughter Catherine; and grandchildren, Courtney, Megan and Austin of Cochrane. He is also remembered by his sister, Donna (Mel) Johnson; brothers, Arnott (Lorna) and Bud (Roberta); sister-in-law Raili Whitney in Thunder Bay, ON; and nieces and nephews both in Thunder Bay and Calgary. He is predeceased by his father, David Kenneth, mother Audrey and brother Merlyn.
Royden was born March 9, 1938 in New Brunswick, moving to Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) at the age of six. He began a successful life-long career in retail at Sears, Canada before starting his Canadian Tire career as a Dealer in 1972. He moved his family from Kitchener, ON to Calgary in 1978 where Canadian Tire was venturing and opened the new Richmond Road S.W. store. Royden felt at home in Calgary and this is where he chose to live the rest of his life. His retirement from Canadian Tire in 1996 was followed by many vacations. The highlight being last year’s 50th wedding anniversary trip he and Darlene spent cruising the S. Pacific, Australia and New Zealand. Royden was a Shriner in the Al Azhar Motor Corps, Calgary, AB. Royden will always be remembered for his ease of making people feel
instantly like old friends. His passions were Family, Friends and Food and sharing a good bottle of wine. The memories of his laughter, his warm and loving smile will be treasured forever.
A Celebration of Royden’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Cochrane Funeral Home (369 Railway Street, Cochrane, AB), on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. The family invites attendees to bring favourite photo memories with Royden to place on display board. A private family service was held at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
