Obituary of Ernest Alec BAGSTAD

March 30, 1924 – October 11, 2011 Ernie Bagstad of Calgary and beloved husband of Lydia passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 87 years of age. Besides his loving wife of 60 years, Ernie is survived by two sons, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, and a son-in-law; David (Georgina), Susan, Matthew, and Barry; and seven grandchildren; Patrick, Michael, Heather, Chris, Tyler, Laura, and Pierce. He was predeceased by his daughter, Dianne. Ernie was born in Stavely, AB. Prior to the war, he worked on fishing trawlers off the west coast. He served with the Seaforth Highlanders in the Italian Campaign then returned to Alberta where he met Lydia. In 1958, they settled in Calgary to raise their family. Following his retirement, he volunteered at the Military Museums and gave Remembrance Day presentations for schools throughout Calgary. His story is commemorated on the ‘Mural Mosaic’ at the Military Museums. A Celebration of his Life will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church (1407 – 7th Avenue N.W.) on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the Military Museums or another charity in lieu of flowers.
