August 23, 1922 – August 20, 2011 José K. Rosales MD FRCP(C), beloved husband of Leonila (Nell) Rosales of Montreal and recently Calgary, passed away on August 20, 2011 following a brief illness at the age of 88 years. Dr. Rosales is survived by his beloved wife, Nell de la Costa Rosales, two daughters, Virginia of Boston and Victoria (Robert Marr) and two grand daughters, Samantha and Abigail of Calgary. He was predeceased by a son, Roberto. Other relatives include José O. Rosales and his family of Toronto. He is also survived by dear friends, Dr. Earl and Mrs. Mary Wynands, Dr. Concessa Matias, Dr. and Mrs. Rafaat Hannallah and Dr. Luis Cuadrado. José had a long and distinguished career as a pediatric anesthesiologist. He was an outstanding clinician, teacher, researcher and administrator. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas, Manila in 1949. He trained in Philadelphia, Boston and London, England and moved to Montreal in 1956 where he was successful at obtaining a resident position in the McGill Department of Anesthesiology chaired by Professor Harold R. Griffith. He later became an Attending Staff at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he excelled in the care of very sick pediatric patients. Open-heart surgery had just been introduced and he quickly became an expert in the anesthetic management of this extremely high risk surgery. He was also highly regarded for his expertise in managing infants who had severe breathing problems. His approach was unique at that time and he made teaching films and videos, which received awards at the Annual Meeting of The Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society. In 1966, he was appointed Chief of Anesthesiology at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and held the position for seventeen years. During part of that time he was also the Chief of Anesthesia at the Shriners’ Hospital. He was the first Filipino anesthesiologist to be appointed to the Anesthesia Examination Board of The Royal College. José was an avid public speaker and also published extensively, having authored and coauthored scientific papers and textbook chapters. In 1983, he became Chief of the Department of Pediatric Anesthesia at the then named IWK Hospital for Children in Halifax. Under his leadership, the Department was significantly transformed. He was not only the driving force behind a thorough modernization of the clinical services, but he was also instrumental in laying the foundations of an academic department. Upon his retirement, the department named their library after him. José however had difficulty after retirement with multiple health issues. The family thanks those who took great care of him over the years, namely: Drs. Crelinsten, Dean, Vaktor, Matouk and his long time friend, Dr. Bill Novick. The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to the dedicated doctors and nursing staff at the Foothills Medical Centre who took care of him during his recent illness. José always told his relatives and friends that his extremely successful professional career would not have happened without the great assistance he received from his wife Nell and his daughters Jinny and Vicky. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Calgary on Friday, August 26, 2011. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
