Obituary of BROWN – Donald Edward
April 2, 1920 – April 23, 2011
Donald Edward Brown, born April 2, 1920, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2011.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Audrey Dora Reed Brown; his four children: Dawn Gartner (Mel), Janet Lamb (Bill),
Reed Brown (Teri), Craig Brown; his seven grand children: James Carswell (Ankie), Erin Gartner, Sara Gartner-Frey (Chris), Scott Lamb, Jonathan Lamb (Jana); Tia Brown (Dan Crowther), McKuen Brown (Stephanie Boyko) and his great grandchildren: Arwyn Carswell and Liam Carswell. He is also survived by his sister Helen Kidd and his brother Paddy Brown. He was predeceased by his parents, Mel and Ethel Brown, his brother, James Robert Brown, and his sisters, Elizabeth Townsend and Joyce Bowhay.
Don was born on his grandfather’s homestead in the Conrich, Alberta area and grew up in the Cochrane area. He went to SAIT to study radio technology. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1939 where he served in Montreal, England and Germany. Don returned from the war and went to Edmonton to study Education. He graduated in 1951 with a B Ed and MA. His Master’s thesis was on the history of the Cochrane / Glendale area.
He moved to Calgary and began his teaching career. Over the years he taught at Crescent Heights High School, Colonel Walker and served as Assistant Principal at King George and Viscount Bennett. When the CBE decided to computerize he became the Educational Coordinator for the School Board as part of the team that set up the initial computer system.
He retired in 1978 and embarked on many new careers that reflected his many talents and interests. He became a carpenter, a handyman, a farmer, a photographer, a collector and a world traveller. He spent 20-years as a Docent at the Calgary Zoo. He was a natural as a teacher and spent his life time learning and appeasing his curiosity. He loved life, camping and spending time with his family and friends.
A celebration of his life will take place at Prince of Peace Manor Banquet Room, (285030 Luther Rose Blvd, NE Calgary, AB), on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
