Obituary of CARROLL – William

June 29, 1919 – April 19, 2011 William (Bill) Carroll passed away 19 April 2011, two months short of his 92 birthday. He was born in Northumberland, England, and immigrated to Canada in 1923 at the age of four. The family settled in Nanaimo BC, where Bill completed his schooling, enjoyed an early enthusiasm for photography and outdoor activities. He enlisted in the army during World War II, and served as a medical orderly in London. This instilled a lifelong interest in medicine. After demobilization, he ventured into the retail trade with the F W Woolworth company. In 1947 he married Vera (Robbie) Robinson, and they had three sons: George, Bill and Jeff. He was a store manager in Prince Albert Saskatchewan, and a volunteer for the Fish and Game League. In 1954 he made a bold move and substantial career change by moving his family to Calgary where he entered real estate sales. This lead to achieving his AACI in real estate appraisals and forming his own appraisal company. In later years he and Robbie took some international trips to conventions; travel highlights which he much enjoyed. He retired in 1984, enjoying some additional travelling, landscape painting, photography, and visiting his sons, wives and grandchildren. In 2004 he suffered a stroke, which impaired some of his capabilities, but not his zest for life. The stroke did not diminish an appreciation of the man who has meant so much to all who knew him. He is also survived by three daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, with the second born on the day of his passing- a coincidence that would have meant much to him. We remember him for his intelligence, his humour, his self discipline, his wide interests, and the gentleness of his demeanour. By example, he taught us honesty, diligence, generosity and moral values. The family would like to thank his friends for their kind thoughts, but have requested no flowers nor donations. As Dad was an enthusiast of nice vintages, please toast his memory in your own way. A celebration of life will be arranged at a later date. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Bill Carroll, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200
