Obituary of LOGAN – Archibald David Dan

July 23, 1918 – April 11, 2011 Archibald David “Dan” Logan. Prof. (Emeritus) University Western Ontario, London, Ontario passed away April 11, 2011 at the age of 92 years. He is the last remaining member of his family’s generation. Prof. Logan was born in St. Catharine’s, Ontario; he attended Victoria Public School and the St. Catharine’s Collegiate Institute. He grew up in the great depression. He was active in many different athletic endeavours- swimming, baseball, hockey, football, basketball, and speed skating; more than proficient in all. He was a world class swimmer in the 50-100-400 metres, placing a close third in the 1936 Olympic trials where he was the youngest member in the race. He became the first lifeguard appointed at the new St. Catharine’s Municipal Beach at Port Weller on Lake Ontario. Dan became a member of the R.C.M.P. in 1938, trained in Regina Depot where he was appointed assistant riding instructor, and performed as a member of the Musical Ride. He later was in “O” division Toronto as a counter intelligence officer, following detachment duties in “K” division Alta at McLeod, Lethbridge, Taber, Blairmore, and Medicine Hat. He successfully competed in track and field events in the R.C.M.P and later in the R.C.N.V.R. during WW II. Dan was not only known for his athleticism, but he was highly regarded as a visual artist. He graduated after the Second World War from the Ont. College of Art with Honours in Fine Art Drawing and Painting where he completed the four year course in two years. He graduated in 1948 from Post Graduate studies in the Dept of Education U of T with D.V.A. assistance. He taught in the high school art programs for twenty years, later becoming Assistant Prof. of Art Education at Althouse College U.W.O. from 1969 to 1978. Prof. Logan also took Post Graduate courses at U of T and Syracuse University. Dan was a member of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto (The Group of 7) and has several works in their possession. He also was a distinguished member of International Poets Society of Maryland. He was a winning coach at various high schools in Toronto and Oakville where he coached both semi-pro football and basketball, winning the Men’s Sr. Basketball Championship of Central Ont., and coaching the high school team to the provincial finals. He scouted for the Hamilton Ticats in the fifties and sixties and played football for the Ted Reeves Balmy Beach Team in the forties. He was head coach with Burlington Braves Jr. Ont. Football Team where he had a winning record. He was also an assistant to Tom Watt (NHL Coach) with the Toronto Invictus Team. His artistic achievements are numerous as a nationally known portrait painter, landscapist, poet, and dedicated art and history teacher at both the high school and university levels. Dan leaves behind wife Robin Logan (nee Whyte); daughter Robin Jr (Jim); sons Mike, Pete, and Dan Jr. (Donna); and five grandchildren Conor, Mikaela, Lindsey, Mark and Robin Logan III.
