Obituary of POWELL – Joan Wyatt

May 30, 1929 – April 9, 2011 Joan’s long and difficult journey with cancer ended gently on Saturday, April 9, 2011. It was a comfort to the whole family that after nearly fifty-eight years of marriage, Ed was able to be at Joan’s side for her last few days at the Chinook Care Centre Hospice. Joan, a native Calgarian, was born May 30, 1929, the eldest daughter of Rose and Albert Welham and sister to Kathleen (Bruce) Hatfield and Dennis (Kathleen) Welham. Children, Shelley, Trudy (Chuck) Sawyer, John (Rinde), Stephen (Tracey), and grandchildren, Julie (Kyle), David, Stephanie, Joanne, Diana, and Lauren will all treasure Nana’s devotion and loving influence on their lives. Joan will also be remembered fondly by sister-in-law Carole (Bill) Powell, her cousins, nieces, nephews, and many supportive friends. A homemaker and later a part-time Sears employee, Joan enjoyed traveling with Ed, being a Mom and Nana, spending time with friends, baking, knitting, gardening, curling, bowling, and playing bridge. Joan was also an enthusiastic volunteer who gave her time and considerable talent to numerous organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart Fund, Girl Guides, Calgary Winter Club, and Pleasant Heights/Wild Rose United Church. Memorial Services will be held at Wild Rose United Church, (1317- 1 Street NW) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The Powell family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of Scenic Acres Retirement Residence and the Chinook Care Centre for their kindness and compassionate care of both Joan and Ed. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Wild Rose United Church Foundation or the Alberta Cancer Foundation. In living memory of Joan Powell, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH Telephone: (403) 276-2296.
