Obituary of HOMER-DIXON– Richard Eugene

August 6, 1915 – April 5, 2011 Left to miss Gene’s dynamic presence are his loving companion of twenty-three years, Minda and sons Harry (Jacquie) and Chris. His beloved grandsons Richard and Patrick will be guided by his bravery, a lifetime of loyalty to friends in all walks of life and an example of living life to the fullest. Gene was predeceased by his special friend Alan Hunter whose companionship and council he cherished. Gene grew up in a family of original homesteaders in the Coldstream area of British Columbia. He attended Vernon Preparatory and Shawnigan Lake Schools, and then worked as a fitness instructor in Vancouver. As a member of the Trois Rivere and the British Columbia’s (Duke of Connaught’s Own) Regiments Gene proudly served in the UK, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe during WWII. He returned from the war to teach physical education for sixteen years at the Vernon Preparatory School. After settling in Calgary in 1962 he worked for Gordon Pogue as a fitness instructor at Pogue’s Health Club. Gene was years ahead of all others in his belief that physical fitness would lead to a longer, healthier life. He played competitive badminton and tennis until the age of 45 and golfed at Earl Grey Golf and Country Club into his late 80’s. Friends and family will gather to celebrate Gene’s life at the Calgary Elks Lodge and Golf Club, 2502 – 6 Street N.E. on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. You may forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
