Darold, Alexander, Katherine and Conrad,
I am sorry for the delay in this post, but I needed some time to process her loss in my heart.
I knew Barb from before her life began in Calgary and was lucky enough to share in the different stages in her life. I watched as she became a wife and then a mother and as she grew into the woman she was.
The many phone visits and the way too few actual times we managed to be in the same place over the years always left me with gratitude that I had this beautiful loving and insightful woman in my life. I loved the laughter we shared and the tears, equally.
She loved you all so much and although she was not ready or willing to leave you so soon, she was confident in that the love and the life’s lessons she shared with you all would give you the strength and tools to move on without her.
Her and I had many talks during this past few years about her knowing she would be seeing us all again…I know I look forward to that and hearing her laughter again.
My heart and thoughts are with you all.

I have had the pleasure of working with Darold and Laura for several years now, and our deepest sympathies are with you and the family at this time.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Barb when I was part of a film crew shooting the movie, Snow Day at your house many years ago. Barb was wonderful then and I always enjoyed seeing her in the years which followed.

Pulse
Daybreak
I follow monarch butterflies dancing
down to the water’s edge.
This morning
a ghost canoe filled with Algonquins
glides slowly past me,
north towards Victoria Island and Nepean Point
this river their highway.
Lately, I have walked this
river’s shoreline my daily haunt.
The dog and I cover endless ground:
rocky beaches, mid-summer grasses,
scrubby fields of wildflowers,
each bloom of bull thistle, lupine, butter and eggs
observed and noted under hot sun,
the honking of geese our soundtrack.
In the distance, the ghost canoe
pulls ashore at Lemieux Island.
Its paddlers drop their giant oars,
jump out and stretch tanned limbs then
submerge themselves in the river’s embrace.
Nightfall now & I can hear
their songs, their drumbeats. Powwow dancers,
the silver jingles on their dresses lit by firelight.
Every soft footfall absorbed into
and resonating from the earth.
No matter what season
you too will hear drumbeats and footfalls
you too will feel the river’s pulse.
Dear Darold, we are very sad to hear about Barb. I remember how wonderful she was to me the few times we met in Canmore. The evening I shared with Barb around the fire in the back yard at 2nd Street with a glass of wine allowed me to see how special a lady Barb was, and always will be. Please take care and treasure those memories…

Barb was an amazingly nice woman, who radiated cheerfulness wherever she went. Her happy, bubbly, and kind personality was contagious, and she never failed to brighten my day. My youth would not have been the same without her, and I feel blessed that I was so lucky to know her. I don’t feel like there is anything I can say to do justice to her wonderful personality, as she was truly a special woman. All I can say is that I hope for the best for the Parken family, and everyone who knew Barb, as I know we all miss her greatly.

She is never really gone, you will carry her with you always.The love she had for you Darold and your children is always there, as my family has learned, you have all the great memories with you. Shannon, myself and our daughter Stacey were fortunate to have spend time with Barbara watching our daughters ride their horses in competitions around Calgary. Barbara was very open with herself and was always happy to tell us about the family. We were always relieved when the ride was over and the girls were
still on their horses.
Remember when the time comes you will all walk with your mother, wife and friend, hand in hand where there is no cancer, pain or sorrow. A place filled with butterflies, love and peace.
