Obituary of CARRUTHERS – Fredric Harold

August 7, 1913 – March 16, 2011 Fredric Harold Carruthers passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and caregivers on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the age of 97 years. Fred was born in Lashburn, SK on August 7, 1913. On the family farm his interest in all things mechanical began. He attended University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. After graduating in 1937, he moved to Toronto to begin his career as a mechanical engineer. In 1938, he married Bernice Lockrey of Saskatoon, SK. They raised their family in Toronto, Stratford and Oak Ridges. In 1952, with his colleague Bruce Quan, he formed the company Quan Carruthers Consulting Engineers. The company soon expanded and became Quan Carruthers King and Quan. In 1977, Bernice and Fred moved to Calgary where Fred opened a branch of QCKQ. Gradually, Fred was affected by memory loss in his seventies and even though his dementia changed our lives forever, he maintained his generous loving spirit. It was a long goodbye. He was granted his wish to donate his body to the medical school at the University of Calgary. Left to cherish his memory are his five children, Harrold (Greta) of St. Catharines, ON, David (Lorrice) of Sprucedale ON, Janice of Calgary, AB, Peggy (Jim) of Calgary, AB, and Glenn (Karen) of Rosthern, SK; thirteen grandchildren and many great and great great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Bernice in 1984 and his dear grandson Eric in 1997.
