Obituary of DUGUID – Scot

March 11, 1919 to March 11, 2011 With deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Scot Duguid, beloved father of Marni Angus and Carle Duguid (Elizabeth) on the morning of his 92nd birthday. He was predeceased by his loving and treasured wife, Marguerite (married 64 years). Besides his loving children, his memory will be cherished by his grandchildren Kirsti, Scot and Lauri Angus, Christopher and Jennifer Duguid, and three great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Charlotte and Lily. He will be remembered by sister-in-law Jean Rasmussen, brother-in-law Gerry Smith, and Robert Angus. Scot was born in Vancouver in 1919. His mother passed away in the flu epidemic that year. He lived in Vancouver until he was eight years old when his father was injured in a railway accident and couldn’t look after him any longer. Scot was sent to Brandon alone by train to live with his Uncle Charlie and Aunt Mame. As a young boy, Scot was very interested in music, and delivered papers to pay for his violin lessons. He played in a number of dance orchestras in the forties. He met his sweetheart, Marguerite, in Brandon, married her in 1944, and moved to Calgary in 1952. Scot played violin with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for many years. In the late 1950’s, Scot became dissatisfied with the length of time it took for string players in the CPO to get bow and violin repairs done, having to send their instruments out of the city for this work. He thus took courses in Chicago, Seattle and New York (Hofstra University) from the best European violin makers, and brought his new knowledge and skill back to Calgary – serving both professionals and amateurs alike from a workshop in his basement. His dream of having his own music store became a reality when he opened Scot’s Music Centre which he ran successfully with Marguerite for thirty-four years. Expanding his service not only to string players but to musicians, students and music educators of all instruments, Scot was at his best when serving his customers. Always displaying honesty, integrity and professionalism, Scot retired at the age of 80. Scot enjoyed playing Bridge and loved cruising with Marguerite. He was a Life Member of the Calgary Musicians’ Association, a member of the Gyro Club of Calgary and Southwood United Church, and a 60 year member of King George Masonic Lodge. At Scot’s request, his remains have been donated to the University of Calgary. A Memorial Service will be held at Southwood United Church, 10690 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary on Friday, March 18, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations in Scot’s memory may be made to the Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival, Ste. 201, 4014 McLeod Trail South Calgary, AB T2G 2R7 where a trust scholarship will be established.
