Obituary of BURFORD – Neville Charles

May 2, 1923 – February 18, 2011 Peter Burford of Calgary passed away peacefully on Friday, February 18, 2011, after a brief illness, at the age of 87 years. Peter was born May 2, 1923 in Gillingham, Kent, England. He was raised in Lima, Peru, Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. Peter served with the Australian Military Forces from 1942 to February 1943 and the Royal Australian Air Force from February 20, 1943 to September 24, 1945. He met Alice in Calgary while he was training at the Number 2 Wireless School (Polytechnic). They were married in Kew, Melbourne on October 27, 1945. Peter worked for Lifesavers Candy Company in Australia from 1940 to 1941 and for one year after the war. Peter and Alice then returned to Canada were he worked for thirty-six years with Imperial Oil until his retirement in 1982. Peter was an avid hiker, skier and world traveller. With his family he hiked a great number of the National Park trails and with the Calgary Senior’s Ski Club, he skied most of the western Canadian and northwest USA resorts. He and Alice travelled and cruised the world upon his retirement. Peter and Alice were long time members of Crescent Heights Baptist Church and the Royal Canadian Legion North Branch #264 and more recently the Chapelhow Branch #284. He was also a member the Esso Annuitants. Peter is survived by his son Gary Burford (Sherry) of Edgewater, BC, and daughter Karen Burford (Tim Sheltens) of Calgary. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-five years, Alice Burford on September 26, 2010.
