Obituary of PRAIRIE CHICKEN – Simon

October 29, 1935 – February 6, 2011 Simon Prairie Chicken, born October 29, 1935 and passed away peacefully on February 6, 2011 at the Strathmore Hospital, surrounded by family. Simon attended the Crowfoot residential school, he played with the Crowfoot School Hockey Team in 1951 in the Bow Valley Composite Hockey League. Simon took on the family farming operation after his father’s passing. He continued to maintain the farm until it became none economical. Simon then set out to find farming employment, seasonal work for other farmers and ranchers in the surrounding areas of Hanna, Cornation, Duchess, and Scandia. During the winter months Simon spent his time in the city of Calgary with family members but also creating many, many friendships with other people. Simon had a love for saddle bronc riding, and talked a lot about his younger rodeo years. Simon’s love for the Cowboy tradition will forever live in him. In 2008 Simon was diagnosed with oral cancer. He kept up a good fight until his passing. Simon is happily reunited with his parents Patrick and Pauline Prairie Chicken, his siblings; Henry Sunwalk, Bona Black Kettle, Joseph Prairie Chicken, Josephine Many Fires, Pauline and Benedict Prairie Chicken. Simon traditionally inherited his sibling’s children, whom he leaves to mourn. Clara, Mary, Herbie, Danny, Reginald, Rose, Charles, Phyllis, and Delbert. Simon also leaves behind many treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren from the following clans mentioned. Wake Services will be held at the residence of Charles Many Fires Siksika Nation on Friday, February 11, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Siksika, AB on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Crowfoot Cemetery.
