Obituary of HOGG – John Edward Jack

May 18, 1931 – January 4, 2011 With deep sadness we announce the passing of John “Jack” Edward Hogg of Calgary on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the age of 79 years. Jack was the beloved husband of Jean, to whom he was married for 57 years. Jack was an only child, born on May 18, 1931 to parents Kenneth and Elma in Toronto. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Toronto, and subsequently started his long career as a geophysicist with Imperial Oil in 1956. He lived most of his life in Calgary and was also posted in Edmonton, Dawson Creek and Houston. At his work, he was known as an excellent researcher and teacher of mathematical methods for seismic data processing. Jack loved nature – especially wildflower photography and bird watching. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed canoeing, hiking and cross-country skiing. After his retirement from Imperial Oil in 1987, he taught geophysics for 8 years part-time at the University of Alberta. He was an active member of the Esso Annuitant hiking and skiing clubs for many years. Jack was dedicated to his family and friends, and will be fondly remembered for his kindness and his wry sense of humour. He passed his final month of rapidly declining health with dignity and grace. He leaves behind his four children; Ted (Christine) Hogg, Susan (Barry) Hertz, Carol (Sandy) Denton, and David (Heidi) Hogg, along with his nine loving grandchildren.
