Obituary of SMITH – Martha Buchanan
January 5, 1917 – December 19, 2010
Martha Smith of Calgary passed away peacefully of natural causes on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the age of 93 years.
Martha was born in Winnipeg, MB and raised in Transcona. She attended Success Business College, excelling as a stenographer to the degree that she was selected from the Canadian Army to engage in highly classified work with British Security Coordination at The Pentagon in Washington, DC during WW2. She met Robert Smith while they were both Scout leaders and actively involved with Chalmers United Church in Winnipeg and they were married in 1955. Retiring and moving to Douglas, MB in 1971, Martha again became involved in church and community activities, appreciating the close knit community and rural life. After Robert’s death in 1982, she briefly returned to Winnipeg before moving to Edmonton to be closer to Alex and family, and finally moving to Calgary in 2005.
Martha is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Alex and Karen; granddaughters, Laurie with great-granddaughters Ella and Ava, and Alexandra (Ally) with fiancé Adrian and great-grandson Kaden. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Smith.
