Obituary
Obituary of GOLDSMITH – Edward Raymond
August 8, 1926 – December 11, 2010
With broken hearts we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, brother, and friend Ray. Ray has gone to be with our mom Louise; who went before him on December 21, 2006.
Ray was a handsome, charming, meticulous gentleman. He was a talented “natural engineer” who could literally fix anything mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or welding. In his most recent endeavours, Ray applied his talents to repairing and restoring antique clocks. He was an accomplished problem-solver who frequently manufactured his own mechanisms and inventions to facilitate creative and successful solutions.
Ray’s adventures and employment consistently revolved around making things work. One of his first jobs was repairing bicycles at Premier Cycle. As a child, his first boat was homemade by himself and his brothers. It stayed afloat on the Bow River until their father, fearing for their safety, set it adrift. As an adult, our family summers were spent motor boating and water skiing on Windermere, Mara and Christina lakes.
Ray maintained his first car, a 1929 Pontiac coupe with a rumble seat. He raced his Model T Ford at the Stampede Grounds and later his V8 Ford at Calgary Raceway. Too young to join the forces, he contributed to the service by repairing airplane engines at No. 32 F.T.S. Bowden. For forty-five years, he was a devoted employee of Standard Brands/Nabisco Brands/Fleishmann’s ensuring all of the machinery in the entire plant was smoothly and productively running.
Ray travelled coast to coast in the U.S. on business trips. He and Louise travelled coast to coast in Canada in a twenty-six foot motor home. They travelled down under to New Zealand twice.
Ray is honoured, admired, and loved by his immediate family: son Don, Liz and family in NZ, devoted daughter and son-in-law Gail and Jim and most cherished grandson Mathew, who Grandpa is very, very proud of. Ray will be remembered by his caring brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Joyce and Bob and Liz, family members, good neighbours and friends. Ray was predeceased by his parents Edward and Agnes, his eldest brother Ernie, and his loving wife of fifty-eight years Louise.
Sustaining us, is the belief that our dad and mom will be together for Christmas, together for mom’s birthday on December 25 and together for eternity.
During this difficult time, we are respectfully adhering to our father’s thoughtful, detailed plans and wishes. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of donations, please spend an “extra special” time with your own loved ones during this holiday season. Special thanks for continuous care and support are sent to Diane, Ken, nurse Sandy, nurse Deanna, We Care, Home Care, Southcentre Safeway Pharmacy staff, Dr. Kroetch, Bob and members of the Calgary Watch and Clock Collectors Association, Rockyview General Hospital and The Beverly Estates Lake Midnapore residents and staff.
In living memory of Ray Goldsmith, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.
