Obituary of BERETA – Jozef John

June 23, 1920 – November 3, 2010 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our much cherished father. Dad left us peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the age of 90 years, having lived a full life. Jozef was born in Lwow, Poland on June 23, 1920. His childhood dream was to be a pilot. When WWII started, Dad was in the air cadets. He survived the first years of the war in various prison camps, saw action in Africa and the Middle East and then was fortunate enough to be able to join the 2nd Polish Corps, part of the British Eighth Army in 1943. He was deployed in Italy, fought at Monte Cassino and experienced the liberation of Italy. After the war, Jozef went to work for Phillips in Holand. From there, he immigrated to Canada in 1953. Dad met his beloved wife Kasia at the Polish Community Hall in Calgary. Jozef found employment at Canada Packers as an electrician until his retirement. Dad was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Parish; he was involved with the Polish Combatants Club and was a volunteer for the poppy fund. Our Dad was a soldier, gentleman, hard worker, and a quiet soul. He became quite a story teller and a charmer in his later years. We would always turn to Dad for his strength and guidance. He will be profoundly missed. Jozef is the father of three children, Helen, Ted (Lorraine), and Donna; the grandfather of two grandchildren, Mel (Heidi) and Jesse (Katie); and the great grandfather of Zyler-Roque Jozef. Jozef will also be forever remembered by his extended family in Poland. Jozef was the loving husband of predeceased wife Katherine (Kasia). Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W.) on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
