Obituary of ROBERTS – Lorne Russell DFC CA

June 13, 1922 – October 18, 2010 After a wonderful life full of love and laughter Lorne passed away peacefully early on Monday, October 18, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife and soul-mate for nearly 70 years, Margaret; son Terry (Harvey Coyote); daughter Marcia Runge (Brent Mitchell); Lea Roberts; grandchildren, Scott Roberts; Barbara Roberts (Devin Wagner); and Alexandra Runge (Christopher Duthie). Lorne is also survived by a brother Carmen and his wife Gertrude; sister-in-law Ena; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Hazel and Vivian and brothers Gordon and Leslie. After graduation from Central High School, Lorne signed with Williams and Williams Chartered Accountants where he worked for two years. Lorne then enlisted in the RCAF and he and Margaret were married on December 27, 1943 before he was posted overseas. Lorne rose to the rank of Flying Officer, and served as a Navigator on a Lancaster Bomber. Lorne completed a full tour of 30 combat missions in the European theater and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for navigating his night bomber by sextant to its target, and back to base safely, after its navigation equipment failed. Lorne returned home and rejoined Williams and Williams. After completing his CA studies and working for several years, he and his partners acquired the firm and formed Roberts Gibson & Fraser (and Gillett later). That partnership was sold and Lorne joined Westburne International as Controller in 1967. He retired in 1987 as Vice President of Finance and Corporate Secretary. Lorne will be remembered as a loving and generous man with a warm and subtle sense of humour. He and “his Marn” were avid travelers, sports fans, and supporters of the arts.
