Obituary of SHACKLETON – William Bill Hayhurst

December 12, 1929 – October 12, 2010 William “Bill” Hayhurst Shackleton beloved husband of Audrey Rosalie and loving father of Billie-Jay, Debbie, and Bill Jr. William, Bill, Sadie, U.B. (Uncle Bill) completed his life journey on October 12, 2010. His wife and best friend Audrey saw him off with his suitcase packed with endless love and wonderful memories. Bill began his journey on December 12, 1929 in South Euclid, Ohio and was raised in Hamilton, Ontario. He and Audrey moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1960 and then went on to Calgary in 1962 and for the rest of his life he was a “True Westerner”! The home Bill and Audrey built in the country was not just a place to live with their daughter BJ; it was a way of life. It was a menagerie of horses, cattle, sheep, ducks, dogs, cats and you name it. It was also a second home to many relatives and friends for get-togethers and sing-alongs. It was a truly happy place to be. Bill also had an insatiable love for adventure travel. Whether it was exploring the Amazon River, trekking the jungles of Thailand, the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal or the Andes of Peru, it was ‘his thing”! Bill and Audrey (often with BJ) travelled to six continents and over forty countries and for periods of time, lived in Austria, Spain, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. While Bill was never a religious man, he had a special creed that he lived by and that was helping others whenever he saw a need. This philosophy was foremost through all his life and the people he helped, family, friends, employees and even total strangers are too numerous to mention. Besides his loving wife and children, he is survived by numerous family members. Aside from family, Bill had many special close friends including his three trekking buddies, Roger Mellor, Bas French and Gordon Meurin. This foursome had a wonderful, bonding relationship that lasted for years.
