Obituary of MATSON- Charles Cameron

April 19, 1959 – September 24, 2010 Chuck was born in the small town of Eston, Saskatchewan to Marlowe and Verda Matson, beautiful parents who instilled in him a passion for farming and above all a love for Jesus Christ. He graduated from Eston High School as Valedictorian. He married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Klettke, on June 23, 1979, and the two of them moved to Saskatoon to begin their lives together and start a family. They settled in Brooks, AB where Chuck began his career in the oil and gas industry. In 1992 they moved to Airdrie, AB, when Chuck and his business partner, Al Jones, purchased Superior Oilwell Cementers. Chuck was nominated Entrepreneur of the Year for two consecutive years in recognition of his leadership and integrity in the business community. In 1995 Chuck and other investors, including his Uncle Lorne one of his best friends and mentor, brought the Western Hockey League back to Calgary with the start up of the Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club. Chuck was well known and respected for his business ethics and hockey initiatives. However, it was his “larger than life” personality and generous spirit which were and will continue to be cherished most. Although Chuck was a true “prairie boy” at heart he was proud to call Calgary home. He loved taking his family to his lake house in Sorrento, BC where he enjoyed wake surfing and making friends and family laugh around the campfire. Chuck and Elaine spent their winter months in Arizona where Chuck enjoyed golfing and pouring his love into the lives of his precious grandchildren, Tula and Maverick. He had a passion for aviation and spent hours upon hours perfecting his craft. Chuck often said he felt closest to God while he flew amongst the clouds. Chuck was the beloved husband of Elaine, loving father to Christa Coppola (John), Jenelle and Tiffany, and dedicated grandfather to Tula, Maverick, and Piper Coppola as well as his predeceased granddaughter Kiya. Chuck is survived by his father and mother, Marlowe and Verda Matson, sisters Marla McLean (Lyle), and Cheryl Quist (Ron), brothers Philip, Harvey (Stephanie), and Dwight (Virginia) and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Chuck lit up every room with his presence and consistently shared his wisdom with all. Chuck will always be remembered for his devotion and unconditional love for his wife, three daughters, and most importantly Jesus Christ, his Lord and Saviour. Funeral Services will be held at Centre Street Church Main Campus (3900 – 2nd Street N.E.) on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow in the Garden of Heritage at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens.
