Obituary of WIRTH – Lois Ethel

August 18, 1935 – September 22, 2010 Lois Ethel Wirth of Calgary, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at the age of 75 years. Lois grew up in Medicine Hat, the daughter of Clarence and Margaret Mellors. She graduated in 1956 from the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC and married David Carter. They settled in Winnipeg, MB and ten years later, moved to Calgary. She nursed at the Winnipeg General Hospital and the Calgary Foothills Hospital. From an early age, she demonstrated a passion for the arts. As a student, she enjoyed singing in trios, quartets and choirs, and in adulthood, Lois joined the Winnipeg Philharmonic Chorus, the Calgary Festival Singers and valued her time with the Centre Street Church Choir. She attended the ballet, symphony and opera. Lois cherished her role as Nano to her grandchildren and delighted in being a volunteer in their schools. Lois’ health training led her to community volunteer roles on the Victorian Order of Nurses Board and was an early member of the Lupus Society. She was an enthusiastic Calgary Stampeder supporter and season ticket holder. Lois had an innate sense of elegance which was evident in everything. She had an enviable sense of style and enjoyed entertaining. Family and friends will treasure the thoughtful notes and the always perfect cards, no occasion was ever forgotten by Lois. Lois’ faith enabled her to face health challenges with courage and grace. Lois will be remembered for her strength of spirit and joy of life. Lois was an inspiration to all who knew her. Lois will be missed by her children, Heather Carter and Maureen (Paul) Petropoulos; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Carter, Steven and Emma Petropoulos, great-grandchild Jaxon Carter; as well as by her late husband Arthur’s children and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Wirth, parents and brother Lorne Mellors. A Celebration of Lois’ Life will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church (1121 – 14th Avenue S.W.) on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
