Obituary of FARLEY – Kathleen
August 19, 1915 – June 28, 2010
On June 28, 2010, Kathleen Farley passed away. She was dearly beloved mother of Lenore (Alan Porter) and Doreen (Walley Temple); grandmother of John, Geoff, Meredith, Eric, Julie, Sara, Lara, Claire, Philip, and Martha; great-grandmother of Noah, Luke, Jonah, Grayson, Nate, Kathleen, Jay, Iris, Julia, Rachel, Hannah Sue, Zak, Katherine, Henry, Sophia, Matthew, Annabella, and Charlotte.
Kathleen was born in Winnipeg, the middle child of Mary Elizabeth and Ernest Whatmough. She attended the University of Manitoba and graduated as a teacher. Her first position was as a Grade One teacher in Sheridan, MB. Here she met her future husband Willet, a geologist with Sherrit Gordon Mines. She and Willet had two daughters prior to his passing in 1950. Kathleen then moved her young family to Winnipeg and returned to teaching. Her first position was at Ralph Brown School. She had a passion for children and loved and treasured each one. She always delighted in the emergence of reading in each of her pupils. She considered it an honour to get to know the siblings and parents, many of whom were new Canadians. Later she moved to special education in junior and senior high school and again treasured the personalities and stories of these young people. She believed in them and could see good in the face of their challenges. Some of these unique relationships continued long after her retirement. Throughout her life she volunteered in ways that were helpful to children or to those who were finding life difficult. She was on the board for Foster Homes for Troubled Youth and taught English to recent immigrants. She was a faithful member of St. Paul’s, Knox and Westworth United Churches in Winnipeg and was on the board, served as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent. In Calgary she joined Knox United Church. Her belief in God was central to her life and she endeavoured to live her life following Jesus’ example. Kathleen loved deeply. She cherished her family. She adored her grandchildren and spent many hours with them. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as by her nieces and dear friends.
