Obituary of Deanna Nicole SLATER

December 5, 1941 – Regina, Saskatchewan October 31, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta Deanna beloved wife of 58 years of Wallace Slater of High River Alberta, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at the age of 76 years after a brave battle with cancer. Deanna is survived by her loving husband Wallace, and daughters: Alyson (Michael), Angela (Rene), and Andrea (James). She was the proud grandmother of Annalise, Nicholas, Danielle, Brittnie, Kristian, Matthew, Mackenzie (Olivia), and Maxwell (Hailey). Her greatest joy was to welcome her great-granddaughter Heidi Mae this past August. Deanna was predeceased by her parents John and Helen Schum, brother-in-law Jim Sauve, grandmother Amelia Signish, grandfather Nicholas Signish, and Mary Signish. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Amelia Leskiew and the staff at the High River Hospital and Dr. Louw and the staff at the Dulcina Hospice in Calgary. Deanna was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on December 5, 1941 while her father was overseas during WWII. She grew up in Flin Flon Manitoba until moving to Saskatoon to attend business college. Deanna began her work life at The Modern Press/Western Producer newspaper. She also did some modeling for the paper. It was during her time in college that she met her future husband, Wallace Slater. He proposed to her six months later and they were married on April 1, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church in Saskatoon. Wally and Deanna moved to Calgary in 1964 and raised their three daughters there. They spent the majority of their married life in the community of North Haven. Wally, Deanna, and their girls also enjoyed many happy years at their vacation home in The Breakers at Sylvan Lake. Eventually, Deanna and Wally moved to High River, where they have resided until now. Deanna had many interests including crafting, volunteering as a councellor at the Calgary Crisis Pregnancy Centre, and working in the bridal industry and high-end fashion retail. She was active in the churches she attended over the years and in counselling ministry. Deanna’s deep faith and love of Jesus guided her and brought her comfort throughout her life. Her faith in Lord Jesus was paramount to her ability to trust God and live one day at a time to overcome serious health issues throughout her 30’s. Despite these adversities, Deanna felt her greatest accomplishment was being able to raise her three girls to adulthood, and the joy she shared in helping to care for her grandchildren. We will remember our Deanna as a kind and caring person who would take the time to help friends and others in need of her support. She was loved and will be fondly remembered by many.
