Obituary of NOWELL – Brian Wayne

NOWELL – Brian (“Lucky”) Wayne March 31, 1949 – June 7, 2010 A bright light went out for us when Brian left this world on Monday June 7, 2010 peacefully and pain free at the Agapé Hospice in Calgary surrounded by his loving family, after a valiant, year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. He leaves us his finest legacy his beautiful spirit and wonderful children. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, he is predeceased by parents Leslie and Josephine Nowell. He is survived by his first wife Dianne (nee Sydora) and Mavis (nee Miller) and their children Grant (Tracey), Melissa (Brian), Brent and Allison, his sisters Joan Mathes, Iris, Dell (Henry Collins), and brother Blayne (Elaine.) He also leaves six nieces and nephews, and five grandchildren. Brian will be greatly missed for his wit, upbeat temperament and unfailing generosity. All his life he has been a dedicated, skilled worker, starting as a sign painter and working for the past 18 years at the firm that became Bolder Graphics in Calgary (where he was nicknamed Lucky), to the position of maintenance manager. Prior to that, in Peterborough, Ontario, he was the studio assistant of noted Canadian artist Harold Town. In addition to converting Town’s farm buildings and a private airplane hanger into painting, drawing and print studios, he and Mavis printed a series of Town’s historically important fine art woodcuts and serigraphs, renowned for their highest standards of printmaking. Brian’s love of gardening produced a glorious profusion of flowers year after year, his cooking won rave reviews, and his outdoor fire pit was a source of year-round pleasure. Brian will remain safe in our hearts for all time. We extend our gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Peter Lougheed Hospital, the Alberta Services Palliative Home Care, and Agapé Hospice for their kindness and expert care.
