Obituary of JOHN MURRAY M.D., FRCSC

March 27, 1934 – May 20, 2010 Dr. John Hunter died Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the age of 76 years. Born in Neepawa Manitoba, he was the son of the late Murray and Edith Hunter of Calgary. John is survived by his wife Joanne; sons Geoffrey, Calgary and Tim (Fiona), Bermuda; grandchildren Jack and Isabelle; and his sister Judy (Guy) MacLean, Halifax. John received his medical training at the University of Alberta, specialized in orthopaedics, and did residencies in Montreal, Philadelphia and Toronto. He was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Calgary from the inception of the Medical School earning a fine reputation as a clinical teacher to residents in orthopaedic surgery. He was on the orthopaedic surgery staff at the Rockyview, Foothills and Alberta Children’s Hospitals. He was an enthusiastic athlete competing in football, basketball, tennis and track and had a true passion for hockey. He skied with the Skimeisters and played in the Hamburger Hockey League. He continued his love of sports volunteering as one of the Team Doctors for the National Men’s and Women’s Downhill Ski Teams. A love of his craft and a dedication to his family mark John’s life and, having grown up imbibed with the lore of the Hudson’s Bay Company from his father, he had an abiding interest in the history and culture of Western Canada. Beloved by his family, he was to his friends, as Samuel Johnson once said, “a very clubbable man”. Flowers are respectfully declined, however, if friends so desire a donation can be made on John’s behalf to the John Hunter Memorial Fund at the University of Calgary (uofcgiving@ucalgary.ca).
