Obituary of SOLDIER – Woodrow

January 4, 1957 – May 4, 2010 Woodrow (Woody) Dyce Soldier, beloved husband of Martina of Morley, passed away peacefully in Calgary on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the age of 53 years, after a short illness. Besides his loving wife, Woody also leaves behind his precious six children, Lennaya, Karesa, Tequisha, Brandon, Dyce, and Keenan; and three beautiful and cherished grandchildren, Sheridan, Trace and Shayden Lee; special sister Irene Crawler and adopted daughter Glendolene and her two children, Landon and Tiara of Whitecourt, SK. He is also survived by his brothers, Bud (Carol), Ferlin (Charlene); sisters, Irene and Martha Crawler; nephews, Floyd Beaver and Keith Beaver. Woody also leaves behind numerous relatives, Glen (Brenda) Goodstoney, Dave (Grace) Daniels, Lou Crawler, Frank (Glenda) Crawler, the Goodstoney family, the Crawler family of Morley, the Crawlers from Big Horn, the Onespots from Sarcee, Barbera and Orville Daniels from Eden Valley, Doral Bearspaw and family; and his in-laws, Violet (Richard) Amos, Annie (Sam) Ear; brother-in-law, Randy (Linda) Baptiste; and cousin Glen (Paula) Stevens. He was predeceased by his parents Annie (1981) and Guy (1983) Soldier; sister Vicki Soldier (1994); Auntie Delia Soldier (2000); Alma Crawler (2001); and brother Floyd Soldier (1964). Woody was from a respected heritage on both sides of the family – 4th generation of the late Uncle Hector Crawler. We sincerely apologize for anyone we have missed. Woody will be remembered for his charisma, passion and knowledge for the many jobs that he has done. At a young age Woody participated in the Rodeo Circuit, played hockey and was an avid hunter. While still keeping up with his education, he drove the Morley Community school bus which at that time was run by Ray Mills. In 1988 he joined the Stoney Tribal Police. Shortly after, he became the first Stoney member to join the RCMP and was dispatched to Cochrane, AB. During his time with the force, he owned and operated his heavy equipment company, WMS Trucking Ltd. From 2000 to 2002 he took a leadership role as Councilor for the Chiniki Band. After his leadership he returned to his steady employers, Tawow Resources and Precision Drilling, for whom he enjoyed working. After all the years that he has worked off the reserve and prior to his illness he did his last services to the community, working for the Nakoda bus lines.
