Obituary of HEWITT – Joan Mary

March 31, 1926 – April 14, 2010 Joan Mary Hewitt (nee Pratt) passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 in Calgary, Alberta, in her 85th year. Born in London, England on March 31, 1926 to William and Mary Pratt, she was the beloved wife of Douglas Maxwell Hewitt, who predeceased her on January 29, 1997. Joan was the dearly loved mother of Martin Hewitt and wife Anne of Frisco, Texas and grandmother of Joseph and Kathleen of Calgary. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Ann Pratt of Dundas and Joan Pratt of Sechelt, BC. She was the loved aunt of Jeanette Boniface of Brantford, Brian Pratt of Saskatoon, SK, Judith Pratt of Bakersfield, CA, Susan Rodgers of North Bay, and David Pratt of Regina, SK; and beloved Great Aunt and adopted Auntie Joan of many children. Joan was a loving and loved friend of many in Calgary, Hamilton, Northampton, England and Clearwater Beach, FL. Joan was predeceased by her brothers and sister-in-law David, Charles, Alexander and Agnes. Joan partnered with her husband Doug as “The Maxwells”, performing magic for over forty years in many countries, especially enjoying performing for children at McMaster Medical Centre, with the Shriners and at Dominion Stores’ annual Christmas parties. Joan derived great satisfaction from her career as a medical secretary, working for many years with Drs. Sincerbox and Naganobu on Upper Ottawa Street in Hamilton. Joan was President of the Home & School Association at Fernwood Park and Hampton Heights Elementary schools, a life member of the U.C.W. and a long time member of St. John United Church in Hamilton. Joan’s kindness and deeply caring nature brought comfort to many, from the time she was a 17 year old at Lewisham Hospital in London caring for air raid casualties, to later years with the Pastoral Care group at St John United Church, Hamilton. Her thoughtful acts and words brought special comfort and healing to those suffering loss. Special thanks to the dedicated and caring staff of Mount Royal Care Centre in Calgary. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. A Memorial Service will be held in Hamilton at a later date.
