Obituary of HEFFERNAN – Gerald Francis

September 16, 1919 – April 2, 2010 Gerry Heffernan passed away peacefully in Calgary, surrounded by family members at the age of 90 years after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Gerry was born on the family homestead in Grainger, Alberta. Gerry served with the RCAF during WW II. He married his sweetheart Marguerite Lavoie in 1942. After the war, he began a 37 year career as Trainman and Conductor with the Canadian Pacific Railway, retiring in the early eighties as Conductor of the Calgary to Edmonton Dayliner. Gerry was a long time member of the United Transportation Union. Gerry enjoyed spending time with his large family, as well as camping, fishing, billiards, garage sales and golfing. He was known to family, friends, and neighbours as a Jack of all trades, and could fix almost anything and always had the time to help others. Gerry will be lovingly remembered for his sense of humour, love of dancing, musical and vocal abilities, moral ethics, and his long winded wisdom which he gladly shared with others. He was predeceased by his loving wife Marguerite in 2000, his father Joseph in 1953, his mother Eva in 1985, and his brother Martin in 1999. Gerry will be greatly missed by his four sons, Brian (Barb), Larry (Kathy), Murray (Holly), Craig (Susan); his two daughters, Jeanine (Jim) Moriarty, and Colleen (Colin) Aitken and his special friend Margie. Gerry has fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Gerry is also survived by his sister, Eileen, and brother, Joseph (Marie), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Holy Name Catholic Church (2223 – 34 Street S.W.) on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church (2223 – 34 Street S.W.) on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow in St. Joseph’s Section at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
