Sorry to hear about your loss. I was in Mexico and the southern US when this happened and when I returned no one contacted me. Roy was what I used to call the first real person I met on staff at the Physics Department. He shared not only his knowledge, but his everyday life with his students. He was Canadian like most of us.

I will remember with great fondness the passion of Dr. Krouse’s dedication to science. As an undergraduate, I had the opportunity to work in Dr. Krouse’s lab at the University of Calgary, and that experience deeply affected my career path as a professor and scientist. I also appreciated Dr. Krouse’s love of life, of music and skiing and model trains. Dr. Krouse’s memory will be with me always.

I have met Roy the first time at big isotope conference in Moscow in 1978, where he was talking in Russian on sulfur isotopes. I recocognized him as somebody exceptional among scietists – a great man!

After a number of my visits to Calgary on his invitation and two his visits to Poland (one with you, Irene) and long term correspondence exchange (the latest before last Christmas), I simply cannot imagine that this STRONG MAN passed away. I will allways keep in my mind his generous acceptance of me and my coworkers – Piotr Staniaszek, Mariusz Jedrysek, Jarek Nowak.

Heartfelt condolences for all of you. Roy was so generous that he even

helped the set out of the European Society for Isotope Research (ESIR) in

the early ’90s. He accepted our invitation and gave very interesting planary lectures during the first two Isotope Workshops organized by the ESIR about sulfur isotope geochemistry and its applications. Beside this he helped the personal carrier of some of us, and his house in Canada was always open for

us.

I have learned the tragic news with great sadness. My prayers and sympathy goes to Prof. Krouse’s family. Having met him very early in my career, I was amazed by his warm and collegial approach to young and inexeprenced adepts like me. He would always offer his time and advice, which was of great value. We will all miss him very much.

I deeply regret having to miss the funeral today of Roy, my long-time friend and scientific collaborator. He will be greatly missed in all the many fields of science in which isotope-ratio mass spectrometry is used, as well as by his colleagues at the University of Calgary. Dear Irene, Donald and family, and Ian. We were deeply saddened to learn of Roy’s passing and send our sincere condolences to all of you.

Though it’s been a few years since we were in touch, we have many happy memories of good times spent with the Krouse family, of backyard barbecues in Edmonton, of many family dinners, and of one very special evening just before Christmas in Edmonton long ago when a very cold and ragged bunch of carol singers were welcomed into your home and treated to an impromptu fiddle and guitar concert that far outshone our own feeble musical efforts.

Roy was a superb mentor and supportive friend through Ken’s PhD and post-graduate years, taking him to intellectual places he would never have reached on his own, and the years he spent under Roy’s guidance were among the most rewarding and enlightening that he has ever known.

Irene, you and Roy took such trouble to make young students and faculty feel at ease in your home, spouses, children and all, from all over the world. No one who experienced the famous Krouse hospitality will ever forget it, and Calgary isn’t the only place today where people are in mourning for a great guy. I would like to offer my sympathy to Roy’s family at this difficult time. Roy was very generous with his time and comments when I was a graduate student in the U of C’s Dept. of Archaeology. He helped me to become familiar with an area that was initially very foreign to me, and did so with warmth and good humour. His enthusiasm about the potential of stable isotope analysis to tell us about the world around us was infectious, and a real inspiration.

We hope that you have many happy memories to comfort you at this time. We were glad to have had the opportunity to know Roy. He will be missed by so many people in so many different walks of life. Mike really valued his friendship. Roy was a true gentleman. We offer our heartfelt condolences. The last year must have been very difficult for all of you, but the support that you gave Roy was truly inspirational and he was so very proud of all his family.
