Obituary of BARRETT – Janice Margaret

June17, 1939 – February 15, 2010 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Janice Margaret Barrett beloved wife of Gregory Ward Barrett of Calgary, mother of Catherine (Ian Young) and David (Jorgen Neilsen) and proud grandmother of Elise. Born in Essex, Janice grew up in post-war London and Kent, trained as a teacher and taught young children as well as starting and promoting a Playgroup movement. She married Gregory on April 21st, 1962 and they moved to Canada in 1971 immediately calling Calgary home. Again she became involved in early childhood education and then with Calgary’s YWCA, serving on several committees, the Board of Directors, as President, and latterly the Alumnae. In the ‘80s she changed career paths once more moving into office administration, working with the YWCA, becoming part of the excitement of opening the new Talisman (then Lindsay Park) Sports Centre, the 1988 Olympics and eventually with a private company. Over the years she was blessed with making many friends, particularly after moving to an over 40s condo complex, where she felt her life just kept getting better. She wished to remember and thank all these people for their comradeship and pure love (they know who they are). She said that it was after she developed cancer that she really came to appreciate the meaning of the word love. Just prior to passing she wrote that she leaves her family to reminisce, laugh over funny stories and slap their foreheads at her impossible gaffes; she promises to do better next time. Her family isn’t quite sure how that would be possible. A Celebration of Janice’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (82 Crowfoot Circle NW) on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the YWCA at (www.ywcaofcalgary.com). In living memory of Janice Barrett, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.
