Obituary of FONG – Garry You Ming

March 10, 1931 – January 16, 2010 Garry You Ming Fong, beloved husband of Betty, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 16, 2010, surrounded by the family he loved so much. Garry leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of many years, Betty (Wai Fong); his children, Dabby (Alan), David, Daniel, Dale, Darren, and Kam; his grandchildren, William (Jennifer), Jennifer, Jonathan, Alaina, and Alexis; and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife Patricia (Hai Fung); granddaughter Lindsey; and son Danny. Garry was born in Hoy Ping, Guangdong, China on March 10, 1931. He came to Canada in 1954 to seek a better life for his new family. He worked in a market garden to save enough to bring over his young family. Reunited, he operated Crystal Café, which is now present day Eau Claire. Garry was able to save enough to then open Crystal Grocery in the township of Bowness in 1960. Here he established roots and remained for the duration of his life. His grocery store was and always will be affectionately remembered as “Garry’s” by all who lived, worked and attended school in the community. Garry was a hard worker, devoted to his family, business and friends. He was quietly generous in his help to others in so many ways, rarely giving a second thought. As busy as he was, he always found time to enjoy Stampede Wrestling without fail, and the peacefulness of tending his many animals and garden at his acreage home. He pursued all that he wanted to achieve and succeeded with grace and modesty. Garry has always been an active member of the Sue Yuen Tong Benevolent Association and the Chinese Freemasons since his arrival to Calgary, AB. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
