Obituary of BURGESS – Roy Mason
September 11, 1915 – January 15, 2010
Roy Mason Burgess of Calgary was called to rest on Friday, January 15, 2010 at the age of 94 years, with his daughters by his side.
Born in 1915 in Drumheller, AB, to Francis Tarbuck and Thomas Burgess, Roy lived on the homestead near Drumheller, AB, where he went to school and worked at Webb’s grocery store and a service station until he joined the army. He married Anne Yvette Andrea Roy, from Bathurst, NB in 1943. Roy remained with the Canadian Armed Forces for twenty-five years and served in the Korean War. He went on to work at the courthouse as a judicial clerk before retiring near Vernon, BC. Roy and Anne eventually moved back to Calgary to be close to their daughters.
Roy was a devoted husband and father to his three daughters, Connie Beach of Ottawa, ON, Carol Burgess and Leslie Burgess, both of Calgary. Roy was known by all who loved and knew him for his gentle demeanour, sense of humour and love of animals. He loved drives in the country, taking long walks with his dog, spending time with his family, and playing golf in his earlier years. Roy was a true gentleman, and his quiet courage and strength will forever be admired and remembered.
Besides his three daughters, he is survived by his grandchildren, David, Steve, Danny and Darren; great-grandchild Ashley; sisters Marjorie Molzahn (Bill); Doris Pickard, Dorothy Brogan (John); and brothers, Frank Burgess (Norma); Bill Burgess and sister-in-law Rose Burgess. Roy was predeceased by his wife Anne in 2001, sister Irene Nelson (Henry), brother Raymond and brother-in law Edward Pickard.
