Obituary of Honourable M. Earl Lomas Q.C.

April 27, 1930 – September 26, 2009 Earl was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, the youngest of the six children of George and Amy Lomas. In 1934 the family moved to Calgary’s Elbow Park, where Earl grew up and went to school. He also attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton, graduating in 1950 in Commerce and 1953 in Law. Returning to Calgary, he articled in law at Macleod Dixon, as it became known, then in time became a partner and practiced law there for 28 years. It was an exciting time in the oil patch and he worked closely with many influential people and projects that became almost legends as time passed. In 1981 Earl was appointed a Justice of The Court of Queen’s Bench, retiring from there in 2003. His many accomplishments include being appointed a Deputy Judge of the Supreme Court of the Yukon and conducting several trials in the Yukon, including what at that time was the first Yukon Supreme Court trial ever held in Carcross, Y.T. As well, he was appointed a Deputy Judge of the Supreme Court of the North West Territories. Earl always enjoyed the challenges of his working life, and the people he met there, but he also had time for other activities. He became a Scoutmaster and was also a Board Member of the YMCA. He was chairman of the committee which oversaw the relocation of Camp Chief Hector to its present location just off Highway #1 at Morley. He also enjoyed trail riding, hiking, and canoeing, serving in 1964 as president of the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies. There is no doubt, though, that his chief recreational love was golf. He became a golfer at the age of twelve at the Calgary Golf and Country Club and could always be found there on the slightest excuse. He served several years on the Board and also as President from 1989 – 1990. Earl is survived by Dorothy, his loving wife and partner of 55 years, daughter Margaret, and sons Rob, Stuart (Janet) and Ken (Sheri) also by grandchildren Alex and Chloe. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Bill Upton and numerous nieces and nephews.
