Obituary of HOGG – David C.

September 5, 1921 – August 9, 2009 Dr. David C. Hogg beloved husband of Jean Hogg, of Boulder, Colorado, passed away on August 9, 2009 at the age of 87 years. Dr. David C. Hogg was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan on September 5, 1921. As a young child he moved to North Battleford, SK, growing up a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in North Battleford, and later St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boulder, CO. David received his BSc. (Radio Physics) from University of Western Ontario in 1949. He received his MSc. (Physics) in 1951 and Ph. D. (Physics) in 1953 from McGill University. He joined the Canadian Army in 1940 and took a luxury liner converted to a troop ship to United Kingdom and arrived in Glasgow, Scotland on Christmas day 1940. It was during his five years of service overseas that he learned about a new radar system that influenced his education and career. He met Jean MacMillan (“The prettiest girl at the dance.”) on the outdoor dance floor at Wonderland in London, ON and in 1947 they married. In 1953, Bell Telephone Laboratories recruited him to Holmdel, New Jersey and he stayed with the company until 1977. During his distinguished career at Bell Laboratories, he was closely associated with the Nobel Prize winning physicists Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson. He was a contributing author for “The Big Bang Theory” (published in 2009) and had more than eighty publications relating to fundamental research in microwaves, radio propagation and attenuation from rainfall, antenna design, optics, satellite communications and remote sensing. Dr. Hogg was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1978 for his work at Bell Labs. He joined the NOAA Wave Propagation Laboratory (now ESRL/PSD) in 1977 and was chief of the Environmental Radiometry and Radio Meteorology Program Areas (1977-1986). He was instrumental in the design and implementation of Wind Profilers, Radiometric Profilers, and many of their applications to remote sensing of the atmosphere. From 1983 to 1994, David also enjoyed a career as an Adjoint Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In addition to his membership in the NAE, he was a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, was awarded the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society’s Distinguished Achievement Award in 1984 and received a U. S. Department of Commerce Silver Medal in 1983. He contributed to two NATO Institutes to committees of the U.S Army services and holds numerous patents. He was a member of AAAS and a past United States Chairman of URSI Commission. David had a lifelong passion for music with many pieces of his classical music published by Voice of the Rockies. He was a vocal composer, as well as a choral, strings and piano composer. He participated in many public performances as a vocalist, pianist and composer. He sang at the 1938 Regina Exhibition, where he composed both music and lyrics. In 1992, David received a composer award from the Colorado Music Educators Association. Recently, David completed a large musical composition to the Canterbury Tales. Dr. Hogg also had a passion for fishing, a love for his English Springer Spaniel (Brandy) and was an avid golfer, tennis player and ‘Over the Hill Gang’ skier in retirement. With his wife, Jean, David traveled throughout the world, Canada and the United States many times. Dr. David C. Hogg is survived by his loving wife Jean; children, Randal Hogg of Aurora, Colorado and Rebecca Ferguson and son-in-law Richard Ferguson of DeWinton, Alberta; three grandchildren, Stevie McKinney, Caitlin Ferguson and Ryan Ferguson; sister, Margaret Hierlihy of Picton, Ontario, as well as many nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his grandson, David Hogg and daughter-in-law Peggy Hogg. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colorado in early October 2009.
