Obituary of VAN WAES – Prudent Ludovicus

May 21, 1920 – August 7, 2009 Prudent Van Waes husband to Jewdokia (nee Kononenko) of sixty-four years passed away peacefully at the age of 89 years at the Aspen Ridge Lodge in Didsbury, AB on Friday, August 7, 2009 after a short struggle with lung cancer. Prudent was born in Aardenburg, Holland where he spent his early years. When the Second World War broke, he enlisted in the allied Dutch Army with the 15th Company, 14th Infantry Regiment. Shortly after the invasion of Holland, Prudent was taken to Berlin where he found himself in a work concentration camp. It was there he met Jewdokia, who too, was taken by cattle car from the Ukraine to work with the women there. After the liberation in 1945 Prudent and Jewdokia were married on May 16, 1945. They eventually made their way to Canada in 1953 where they settled in Calgary, AB. Prudent took on the vocation of carpentry and was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ogden Branch #154. He was well known for his sense of humour and witty stories (stretched, of course). In the past year and a half, he was especially fond of the many friends he came to know and the care he received at the lodge. Besides his doting wife, Jewdokia, Prudent is survived by six children; Tony (Donna), Nick (Anne), Rose (Doug) Esligar, John (Corinne), Jerry (Lori), and Pauline (Ron) Jack; twelve grandchildren; Nelson, Vanessa, Michael, Nicole, Michelle, Charmaine, Amanda, Katrina, Tyler, Colin, Travis and Justin as well as four great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church (7103 – 20A Street S.E.) on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
