Condolences
Mary Shneeberger was my Grade 4 to 6 music music teacher at Killarney Elementary. She brought outstanding talent to a bunch of the little poor kids I grew up with for 6 years. Our school until Grade 4 had no music program. One day they moved the library to a larger area in the little kids wing and the former library became her conservatory music room for the shy, hapless and hopelessly musical, where she nurtured latent talents. All 32 kids in my class got individual vocal trading and music reading lessons for 3 years. We learned the harp and bells, firstly & performed live. We got to perform in Stephen Avenue Mall & ate lunch in the Queen's Room at the Palliser Hotel. Also a trip up the Husky Tower for an afternoon. In Grade 6 our Librarian sewed costumes for each child and we memorized the Operretta Pirates of Penzance. It took us a year, but we won the competition & had the privilege to perform at the Jubilee Auditorium. Not one child was discluded from the performance on account of her humorous approach & open way to draw kids out. The money from our performances funded the School Board's continual music programming for kids. I moved to BC in 1974 but thought of her fondly in my 30 years as a social worker. I was sad to discover she had passed so my condolences go out to her family, my class had the privilege to meet at the Jubilee. Her commitment, dedication and genuine love for chdren & plus the patience of Kobe, at times I'm sure, will never be forgotten. God bless.
